Updated with pictures!!
Were here!
Trip was uneventful except for about 30 minutes or so of
turbulence--enough to knock drinks over and make Blake feel
queasy, but it got better and no further problems. Plane
was packed--there is some special tour offer to Beijing that
even the flight attendants were talking about.
We left Newark and tracked over Maine and Greenland over
the polar cap and down from the Arctic into China. Would
have never guessed that was the route. Our flight time was
under 13 hours!
They sure feed you a lot. Mostly a menu of the "Lean
Cuisine" variety, but after flying so long and getting a
tablespoon full of peanuts & pretzels it was at
least recreational. CSI New York, Miami and House seem to
be the preferred shows along with the feature movie
presentations Second Hand Lion & Walk the Line.
We will be off to the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square
and other in town spots during the day tomorrow with the
Gospel Light folks after I give Rob Tucker his Carson-Dellosa
samples for review and we all go over to the Xinhua
Bookstore--the Chinese version of Barnes & Noble. Cindy is
hoping for Starbucks in the Xinhua, but doubt it. There was
one in the Beijing airport.
Friday is the Great Wall . . . .by the "Great Walls" of
China--I love it!
In the 10 years since Cindy's parents were here there has
been a lot of change, especially noticeable in the airport.
The progression of the culture is on a fast track.
You know we are exhausted. We arrived at 3 PM Beijing
time which for us was about 2 AM. We are trying to keep
going until about now so our time clock is not off too much.
Met other families on the plane that are coming over to
adopt--all have wonderful stories of Forever Families just
about to be united. We are the only ones from our agency
this week starting the process in country, but will be with
many families especially in Guangzhou.
We had a great send off by the Thaggard family and Glenn
Wilson--appreciated the prayer time in the airport. Temp &
weather here seems identical to the warmer Spring weather we
have had at home. Something that struck us as obvious is
the initial appearance of Beijing. The steppes west of here
cause a gray dust to settle on everything--it's pretty bad.
Not to mention the pollution. As I sit here in the
lobby--the bar behind me is blasting 70's music. All
American. Also--it's a smoke anywhere goes rule too!
That'll take some getting used to. Our final clearance was
a little slow because the official felt like Ethan did not
look like his passport photo. We got his glasses out and he
put them on, etc. Ethan handled it all in stride, but it's
pretty hard when someone in uniform is looking at you and
saying things that you have NO idea what is being said.
What a reminder how much they are changing.
Have to tell you, on our approach to Newark it
seemed profound that we we could clearly see the Statue of
Liberty in the harbor. "Where the spirit of the Lord is,
there is freedom."
Blessings and we know you're praying for us!
